The Bookmarklet That Twitter Didn't Provide

I'm not a heavy user of twitter. All my narcissistic needs are sufficiently fulfilled via facebook. But then there was all this talk about twitter’s real value being in users sharing links and news. So I start sharing links except I found it annoying to:

copy the link
shorten it using bit.ly
copy paste the short url to twitter
go back to the original page
copy paste the title to twitter
…you get the idea.

So I thought what is better for quickly sharing links than getting the twitter bookmarklet. So I go to twitter and find the bookmarklet they provide. I dragged it to my chrome toolbar and sharing links was as easy as clicking a button.

Except twitter doesn’t provide a bookmarklet!

But this is the internets, someone would have surely written one. So I googled “twitter bookmarklet”. The first result was about someone like me looking for a good bookmarklet complete with sad smiley face. The comments confirmed that there are few, but none that was really good. Some posted only the link while others require you to enter twitter credentials. I searched some more. No luck.

So me and buddy decided to write one ourselves. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the bookmarklet that twitter didn’t provide.

140 bus Twitter bookmarklet: Once added to your browser toolbar, this button will let you tweet the webpage you are on.

On Firefox and Chrome drag it to your toolbar.
On IE right click > add to favorites > Links folder.

How we wrote up this app in an hour.

We are your regular guys with normal day jobs. We like twitter but didn’t like the 140 char limit. So we decided to break it. One evening we had an hour to kill and decided to challenge ourselves to code up our twitter app idea in an hour. We did. Here is how:

Got the TwitterooCore API sby Eric Willis/RareEdge Design Group
Read up the bit.ly API docs
Designed a quick asp.net app
Got a domain name and hosting account from GoDaddy
